Small and Beautiful
I Wonder
Painting still life gives me the opportunity to explore form, colour and light without the time pressures of working out of doors or indeed with live subjects!
It also gives a painter the luxury of controlling objects, arrangement, composition and lighting, and the time to examine the subject for as long as wished. My still life paintings are nearly always of ceramics or glass, fruit or food, or all of these things. Soft, hard, shiny, velvety, glitter, shadow – I love to examine and paint the way light falls on familiar objects. Although oil has been my usual medium here, I have been using watercolour more often recently in painting these favourite subjects.
Adagio
Drawing and painting from the model is one of art’s oldest traditions, and it will never go out of fashion. We are all fascinated by other people, their faces, their bodies, their clothes.  I love to draw and paint people, not just to use them in other compositions, but as primary subjects in their own right.
Music can’t be painted. You have to listen to it. But players, instruments, the orchestra and the drama of live performance for me are endlessly paintable and interesting. The string players are my favourites; the instruments, so beautiful in themselves, and the intent concentration of the players are what I aim to capture.
Evening in San Trovaso
I like to visit different cities. London is my home town; I am there regularly, and this year I was lucky enough to be able to make drawings of the restoration work at the new hotel at St Pancras, opening this year. If only I could see Venice so often!  But visits there have to last me a while. Last year I was in Singapore for a very brief stay after a long absence – the heat, the contrasts of old and new and the shimmering modern skyscrapers have an atmosphere all their own.
Prices for framed oils or watercolours start around £250 depending upon size, although smaller works or drawings can be less.
