Venice is a magic place with water not roads, boats not traffic, voices not machines, and architecture and decoration which is all beauty and interest, whichever way you look. Obviously the crowds now are of tourists rather than Venetians, but still in the mornings in the Dorsoduro you can see local people going about their business, and the canals carry commercial traffic as well as gondolas.
Morocco is a burst of totally exotic culture and vitality, a short hop from London by air. This is North Africa, but Atlantic not Mediterranean: Berber, Arab and French. The energy and vitality of these people make the place irresistible, and the landscape is wild.
I loved the colours and patterns, the mountains and and everything I saw when I was there, and I mean to go back again.
Music can’t be painted. You have to listen to it. But players, instruments, the orchestra and the drama of live performance for me are endlessly paintable and interesting.  The string players are my favourites; the instruments, so beautiful in themselves, and the intent concentration of the players are what I aim to capture.
Still life gives a painter the luxury of controlling objects, arrangement, composition and lighting, and the time to examine the subject  as long as wished. Soft, hard, shiny, velvety, glitter, shadow – I love to examine and paint the way light falls on familiar objects.
I have always enjoyed sketching and painting in London. I like the important and diverse buildings and the people who live and work in and around them, yes, even the flow of traffic! London is a jewel box, handsome on the outside and full of riches inside. The time I spend observing and drawing on the street pays dividends later, when I need to add value to notes and photos collected on the spot.
Prices for framed oils or watercolours start around £250 depending upon size, although smaller works or drawings can be less. To use or enquire about any of these images please contact me.
